ASTM A53 Grade A&B Pipe Overview
ASTM A53 is a standard specification from ASTM International that covers seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe for mechanical and pressure applications, as well as for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines. Though it’s not specifically designed as casing pipe (which is typically covered under API 5CT), A53 pipe is sometimes used as a casing alternative in structural or shallow well applications.
ASTM A53 Grade A & B Overview
Grades
- Grade A: Lower tensile and yield strength, easier to form and weld.
- Grade B: Higher strength, more commonly used in industrial applications.
Chemical Composition (Typical)
Element | Grade A (max %) | Grade B (max %) |
---|---|---|
Carbon (C) | 0.25 | 0.30 |
Manganese (Mn) | 0.95 | 1.25 |
Phosphorus (P) | 0.05 | 0.05 |
Sulfur (S) | 0.045 | 0.045 |
Copper (Cu)* | 0.40 | 0.40 |
(*Copper, Nickel, Chromium, Molybdenum, Vanadium—only if specified)
Mechanical Properties:
Property | Grade A | Grade B |
---|---|---|
Yield Strength | ≥ 30,000 psi | ≥ 35,000 psi |
Tensile Strength | ≥ 48,000 psi | ≥ 60,000 psi |
Elongation | 20-30% | 18-30% |
Common Applications:
- Light-duty casing in shallow wells
- Structural and scaffolding use
- Low-pressure gas, steam, or water pipelines
- Bollards, columns, and piling
Types of ASTM A53 Pipe:
- Type E: Electric-resistance welded (ERW)
- Type S: Seamless
